Words from Pence Calicó
As an artist, I have realized that the best art appears when least expected; from various sources as if via osmosis. Rather than attempt to determine its source, I find myself following an inkling of sorts (perhaps intuitive guidance) allowing for inspiration, leading me through the process.
Creativity is a journey, similar to hiking through mountains with a guide, only this artistic guide can take on many forms. Sometimes it’s a notion or a hunch. It could be words overheard, maybe even a song bird perched outside your window. Other times, I can actually envision my next move like a game of Chess. Nonetheless, artwork is personalized and meaningful to the one who creates it, and that (in and of itself) is something to celebrate.
I imagine everyone approaches art in their own unique ways. There is no right or wrong technique when creating. Art is absolutely individualized in nature, thus creativity is free from rules and regulations. The end results are limitless. Plus, whence fully engaged while focusing entirely upon the creative process, distractions tend to fade away.
In all seriousness, this is how and why I began drawing. For nearly 30 years, I was strictly devoted to constructing poems and short stories. However, I eventually discovered that writing (in general) kept me captive to my own selfish thoughts. So I picked up a pencil a few years ago and started to draw. No words, no need to ponder about the next phrase… no more verbs, metaphors and/or vowels— forgoing all of that unnecessary confusion associated with my vocabulary, I felt compelled to simply draw. I was free to create something new and intriguing, without having to think about myself all the time.
Eventually, I was able to incorporate both art forms into my “therapeutic” repertoire. And voilà… a new concept developed— another option available to help others heal themselves from whatever ailments have arisen.
Allow me to introduce an innovative approach to healing… birthed from personal experience and my creative perspective comes Copy, Paste, Print & Create… a constructive approach to art therapy!
